Getting to Gee's Bend is part of the experience. Tucked in a horseshoe bend of the Alabama River in the heart of the state's Black Belt region, it is a place worth the drive—and a little planning makes the day an easy one.
One thing to know before you set out: you will see this community labeled Boykin or Alberta on maps and road signs, but the people who live here call it Gee's Bend. Now you will too.
Start your visit at the Gee's Bend Welcome Center (12021 Co Rd 29, Alberta, AL 36720). It is home to the River Gallery, a timeline of the community's history, and the start of the Gee's Bend Heritage Trail—and it is where you will find visitor information and a warm welcome.
You can reach us two ways: by car on County Road 29, or by the Gee's Bend Ferry from Camden (cars permitted), a short scenic crossing of the Alabama River. Plan for about two hours from Montgomery (via Selma) and Birmingham, and two and a half hours from Mobile.
Because Gee's Bend is rural, a little preparation goes a long way. Cell service can be patchy, so download your directions before you leave, and check the Gee's Bend Ferry Facebook on the day you travel, since weather or maintenance can occasionally affect the schedule.

About the area.
Visitors to Gee's Bend will find stunning natural beauty and rich culture, but, like any rural area, there are a few things to consider when planning your trip. Grocery stores, hospitals, and restaurants are 30-–60 minutes away, so bring essentials. The area has treated running water, but many homes lack septic systems, so be mindful of water usage. Cell service can be spotty, so download directions ahead of time, and check the ferry status to Camden, as it may close due to weather or maintenance.
