Willie Quill’s Backyard BBQ: Grand Opening Celebration

Celebrate the grand opening of Willie Quill’s Quilt Studio & Pantry, Gee’s Bend’s newest visitor attraction and the first artist-run quilt studio in the Bend to regularly welcome visitors.

Owned by Gee’s Bend quilter Emma Pettway and her husband, Melvin Pettway, Willie Quill’s is a ferry-side destination featuring Emma’s working quilt studio, quilt demonstrations, handmade items, cold drinks, snacks, locally baked goods, and a peaceful place to gather by the Alabama River.

The grand opening celebration will include quilt sales, studio visits, storytelling, kids’ activities, yard games, and local food, with Melvin Jr. grilling brats and hamburgers, served with seasonal sides.

From 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., visitors are invited to join Porch Stories, a Visit Gee’s Bend-sponsored storytelling and family activity series centered on the theme “Surviving the Season the Old Way.” Gee’s Bend community members will share memories of growing up in the Bend, paired with hands-on activities for kids that explore local traditions, seasonal knowledge, and the resourcefulness passed down through generations.

Visitors are also encouraged to explore Gee’s Bend throughout the day and look for quilts displayed on lines in yards, a community tradition that signals guests are welcome to stop, view the quilts, and meet the makers.
