Makers Monday

Join Sew Gee’s Bend Heritage Builders on the first Monday of every month for Makers Monday, a recurring gathering centered on creativity, storytelling, and shared knowledge. Held from 1:00–3:00 PM in the heart of Gee’s Bend, each session is hosted by Claudia Pettway Charley and Andrea Williams.

Andrea Williams, a Gee’s Bend quilter whose work is held in the permanent collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, is part of a lineage that has reshaped global understandings of American art. Alongside her, Claudia Pettway Charley—a fourth-generation quilter and co-founder of Sew Gee’s Bend Heritage Builders—extends this tradition through community leadership and contemporary design collaborations with brands including Adidas, Target, Greg Lauren, and Marfa Stance.

This experience centers on a rare “heritage-to-runway” conversation, exploring how the visual language of Gee’s Bend quilting continues to influence contemporary fashion and design. Participants will learn patchwork techniques while gaining insight into how collaborations are developed, structured, and discussed, including broader conversations around credit, compensation, and cultural ownership.

Working alongside Claudia, Andrea, and the Sew Gee’s Bend Heritage Builders team, guests will create a one-of-a-kind wearable or carryable piece inspired by Gee’s Bend quilting traditions while sharing stories about identity, place, and personal style. The session concludes with a mini “runway” presentation, where participants share both their finished work and the story behind it.
